THE MANAKI BROTHERS AND THE CAMERA 300

As Milton Manaki recalls, in 1905 his brother Yanaki traveled to England, where he bought a Bioscope film camera from the Charles Urban Trading Company’s shop at 48, Rupert Street in London. The camera’s serial number was 300. The brothers used this camera to shoot the first film in Southeast Europe starring their 114-year-old grandmother Despina. Hence the festival’s name, ‘Manaki Brothers’, and the festival awards’ name, ‘Camera 300’.
