Student Program

Студентската програма обединува филмови од млади автори од филмските училишта низ Европа и пошироко. Секој филм носи свој посебен израз, а заедно прават живописен мозаик од перспективи, култури и традиции на визуелното раскажување. Од интимни и лични приказни до формално смели експерименти, овие филмови не само што ја откриваат креативноста на една нова генерација туку и ја истакнуваат суштинската улога на кинематограферите во обликувањето на значењето, атмосферата и емоцијата на филмот.

The student competition brings together films by emerging filmmakers from film schools across Europe and beyond. Each work reflects a unique cinematic voice, while together they form a vibrant mosaic of perspectives, cultures, and visual storytelling traditions. From intimate personal narratives to formally daring experiments, these films not only showcase the talent of a new generation but also highlight the essential role of cinematography in shaping meaning, mood, and emotion.

Curating and presenting a program of contemporary documentary cinema is a complex process for all festivals and cinema platforms, at any point of time. To present it in our current, contemporary moment, can feel, and it thus feels, most of the time, impossible.

In favour of time and space, I will skip the difficulties coming from the documentary form itself. I would rather take a tiny bit of space to remind about the difficulties coming from the social and political currents we are protagonists of. The times we witness and the times we contribute to, call for greater urgencies. In the context of witnessing on the very same devices where cinema resides the most violent acts in history of humanity so far, the role of the programmers and curators at the least goes beyond the form. Documentary cinematographic practices, in addition to the audiovisual experience, produce film subjects. Which are the subjects – themes, people, spaces, practices – that we need to share with, learn from, grow and get together with? Which and whose are the images we need to see?

The Documentary Competition programme of Manaki ICFF gathers what many would see peripheral: cinema as a living space of documenting the underrepresented small acts of survival. Cinema that turns into a space where form is constantly challenged and reinvented in order to serve life and survival.

This year’s selection brings together eight films from many more places than eight countries: we welcome eight films that in tiny, dedicated, generous cinematic and cinematographic acts bring and open up worlds.

In times when many of us are deeply involved in ways of rejecting the world as it is, we were generously offered by each one of the images shared with us shelters where we could feel, we could see, we could live and maybe we could for a tiny bit love the world. Love the world for what it could be, and for how it can feel. And love ourselves for the people we can be to others, for the people we can be to ourselves and for the people we can become.

Thanks to each and every filmmaker, we are honoured to share with you the Documentary Programme of the 46th Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers’ Film Festival.

Марија Џиџева е филмска творец со повеќе од 25 години филмско искуство. Работи како сценаристка и режисерка на креативни документарци и играни филмови. Авторка е на „Списокот на Тони Манџа“, „Погледни го животот низ мои очи“, „Потрага по среќа“, „Некои други приказни“, „Втора шанса“, селектирани и наградувани на многубројни меѓународни филмски фестивали. Исто така, работи на телевизиски документарци и како филмска едукаторка предава на Филмската академија во Штип и води работилници за филмска писменост за деца и млади.

Marija Dzidzeva is a filmmaker with over 25 years of film experience. She works as a screenwriter and director of creative documentaries and feature films. Author of “Toni Mandza’s List”, “Look at Life through My Eyes”, “The Pursuit of Luck”, “Some Other Stories”, “Second Chance”, selected and awarded at various international film festivals. She also works in television documentaries and as a film educator, teaching at the Film Academy in Shtip and leading film literacy workshops for children and youth.

Марко Брдар е словенечки кинематографер, чија филмографија ги вклучува „Безбедно место“ (2022), „Високо сонце“ (2015) и „Татко“ (2010). Неговите дела се прикажани на најголемите меѓународни фестивали, меѓу кои Кан, Венеција и Берлин. Во 2018 година ја добива наградата на Прешереновиот фонд, највисокото национално признание на Словенија за уметнички дострели.

Marko Brdar is a Slovenian cinematographer whose credits include Safe Place (2022), The High Sun (2015), and Dad (2010). His work has been presented at major international festivals, including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. In 2018, he received the Prešeren Fund Award, Slovenia’s highest national honor for artistic achievement.

Дебитира со филмот „Матура“ (2016) на Кристијан Мунџиу, а потоа работи на наслови, како што се „Моето среќно семејство“ (2017), „Малмкројг“ (2020) на Кристи Пуиу, „Р. M.Н.“ (2022), „Метроним“ (2022) и „Тортата на претседателот“ (2025). Со меѓународна кариера, неговите филмови имаат премиери на најголемите фестивали, вклучувајќи ги Кан, Берлинале и Сан Себастијан. Особено „Тортата на претседателот“ ја добива престижната Caméra d’Or на Канскиот филмски фестивал во 2025 година.

Tudor Vladimir Panduru (b. 1989, Piatra Neamț, Romania) is a Romanian cinematographer and graduate of UNATC “I. L. Caragiale,” Bucharest. He debuted with Cristian Mungiu’s Graduation (2016) and has since worked on titles such as My Happy Family (2017), Cristi Puiu’s Malmkrog (2020), R.M.N. (2022), Metronom (2022), and The President’s Cake (2025). With an international career, his films have premiered at major festivals including Cannes, Berlinale, and San Sebastián. Notably, The President’s Cake won the prestigious Caméra d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

An 80 year old man who loves life and behaves like a child is taken to a nursing home, where his life changes drastically. Faced with rigid rules and restrictions that are completely foreign to him, he struggles to adapt to a new world while trying to preserve his sense of freedom, spontaneity and joy.

However, her hopes begin to collapse when she realizes that the man she idealized is not as perfect as he first appeared.

Сочинувајќи ја секојдневната реалност со атмосферата на руралниот пејзаж, филмот се развива како суптилна мистерија, проткаена со необично чувство на немир.

Jason, a young man living with his grandmother, a traditional folk healer, alongside his older brother and cousin in an isolated house in the Auvergne region, finds his family’s fragile balance unsettled when rumors spread about the disappearance of a foreign soldier participating in military exercises nearby. As his grandmother’s health rapidly deteriorates, the family is forced to confront uncertainty, quiet grief, and long-buried tensions. Blending everyday realism with the atmosphere of the rural landscape, the film unfolds as an understated mystery infused with an uncanny sense of unease.
