Organized by the “Manaki Brothers” International Cinematographers’ Film Festival and Europe House Bitola, the inspiring project “Light Hunters: Bitola Through My Lens” officially launched today. This initiative aims to connect the pioneering and visionary spirit of the Manaki brothers with the creative potential of young people from Bitola, using photography as a powerful medium of expression. The project involves students from Bitola who, through theoretical and practical activities, are introduced to the fundamentals of visual storytelling—such as framing, lighting, and composition. At the same time, the young participants are tasked with translating core European values—solidarity, togetherness, and rich cultural heritage—into unique photographs taken throughout their city.
As part of today’s event, renowned Macedonian cinematographer Dimo Popov delivered a lecture to the young participants. He introduced the students to the magic of great photography, explaining in detail the process of ‘capturing’ light, how to select the right shooting angle, and how to successfully convey a powerful emotional or social message through a single shot.
“The essence of a good photograph is one that evokes an emotion. Children are very curious and eager to explore. They are at an age where they are finding their path and seeking a profession that will fulfil them. Photography and cinematography constitute a vast field, but for a start, I think this was a charming lecture tailored to their age group, allowing them to consider what they want to be in life. That is the essence of it—let them explore now, and if they decide to dedicate themselves to photography later, then good luck to them,” said Popov.
Students were assigned topics such as “What would the Manaki brothers film today?”, “The light of my neighborhood”, and “The hidden cultural heritage of Bitola”. They have exactly 24 hours to complete the challenge, explore the city streets, and submit their best high-resolution digital photograph. After the deadline, all submitted photographs will be printed on a high-quality gallery format. A major exhibition will open on 20 September in the prestigious setting of the Officers’ Club in Bitola, as part of the official programme of the 47. IFFC “Manaki Brothers”.
The exhibition will feature both a competitive and an interactive element. A ballot box will be placed by the photographs, allowing visitors to vote for their favourite. Public voting will continue until 23 September, and the following day (24 September) will see the presentation of the “Audience Award” as well as the expert-judged “Best Photograph Award (Manaki Grand Prix)” for the best composition. The top young photographers will be awarded valuable prizes provided by Europe House, official festival merchandise, and exclusive tickets to the closing ceremony of the 47. IFFC “Manaki Brothers” on 25 September.
