As part of the 47th “Manaki Brothers” International Cinematographers’ Film Festival, “House of Light Contrast” (“Casa Chiaroscuro”)—an initiative of the Italian association Collettivo Chiaroscuro—was introduced through a presentation by Luca Coassin, Sara Purgatorio, Francesco Scazzosi, and Luca Ciuti.
The presentation highlighted that Collettivo Chiaroscuro was established in 2022 by a group of Italian cinematographers who believe that collective action, knowledge exchange, and dialogue can help improve the conditions and the standing of the profession.
“In 2022 we decided to create this new association. Cinematographers want to work and change things for the better. We in Italy decided to join forces,” Luca Ciuti explained.
The collective’s philosophy is based on protecting the profession and upholding dignity and equality, as well as preserving the history and tradition of cinematography. An important aspect of their work involves fostering open dialogue among professionals and sharing experiences and knowledge.
“Our philosophy is protection of our work, respect, dignity, and equality, as well as history, tradition, and dialogue. We want to share our knowledge,” says Chuti.
Through “Casa Chiaroscuro” the collective presents its vision of a space where cinematographers can connect, exchange experiences, and discuss the challenges and the future of the profession. At the heart of this initiative lies the idea that knowledge should not remain an individual experience but should be passed on and shared with future generations.
