After its successful launch in 2024, we are delighted to announce the second edition of the SUMOLIGHT Creative Synergy Award.

Inaugurated and supported by SUMOLIGHT, the award was created in partnership with the festival to celebrate the often-overlooked collaboration between a Director of Photography (DoP) and their gaffer, recognizing the essential role this partnership plays in shaping a film’s visual storytelling.

The award honors duos whose combined creativity and technical expertise not only produce striking images but also craft a cohesive visual narrative that resonates with audiences. It acknowledges the indispensable relationship between the DoP and the gaffer—a dynamic, collaborative bond at the core of every visually compelling film.

For the 2025 edition, we are proud to recognize Bill Pope, ASC, BSC, and his chief lighting technician (gaffer), Jonathan Spencer, for their extraordinary work on “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Together, Pope and Spencer created a visual experience as captivating and moving as it is beautiful, demonstrating a rare synergy that elevated the film’s storytelling to new heights.
