Jean-Marie Dreujou: Cameras Give Cinematographers Great Artistic Freedom

Today at the Manaki Cinema in Bitola French cinematographers Jean-Marie Dreujou, Denis Lenoir and Pascale Marin spoke about the evolution of recording tools from the time of the New Wave in French cinema. The workshop was held as part of the 46. edition of the International Festival of Film Camera Manaki Brothers, taking place between 20 and 26 September in Bitola.

The workshop attendants had the opportunity to see segments from films made in the 1940s and later, which show the advancement of technology when it comes to recording tools.

“There are films where the camera was mounted on a wheelchair. At the beginning we had the Arriflex camera, which weighed 15 kgs, then Panaflex, which was 13 kg, then Aaton 35, which weighed 8 kg and could be carried on the shoulder”, Pascale Marin said.

Jean-Marie Dreujou spoke about the early days of cameras in France and showed scenes from a film of the Eiffel Tower, which he made at only 20 years old.

“The technical improvements in cameras were good for cinematographers because it gave them greater artistic freedom”, Dreujou said.
