A Film That Speaks Through Emotions: IMAGO Pays Tribute to Ron Johanson in Bitola

As part of the Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers Film Festival (IFFK) in Bitola, a heartfelt tribute film dedicated to Ron Johanson, a renowned cinematographer and long-standing member of the International Federation of Cinematographers – IMAGO, who passed away in June this year, was screened in a packed “Manaki” cinema.

The screening was filled with emotions as Johanson’s colleagues spoke through the film about his life, his unwavering dedication to the art, and the vision he shared with the entire cinematographic community.

His friends and collaborators expressed gratitude for the inspiration and support he had given them for decades.

Johanson served for many years as President of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and was a prominent member of IMAGO. As his colleagues highlighted, beyond being an artist behind the camera, he will be remembered as a mentor, a visionary, and a man who brought cinematographers from around the world together.

“Beyond titles and accolades, Ron will be remembered for his generosity, warmth, and strong loyalty. He mentored generations of cinematographers, many of whom went on to have successful careers. He brought people together with his infectious energy and a wicked sense of humor,” said the cinematographers and IMAGO members.

IMAGO, the federation that today unites 57 national associations and over 4,000 cinematographers, reaffirmed its mission through this screening – to build a community without borders, where art and collegiality go hand in hand.

The tribute to Johanson in Bitola was not only a reminder of an extraordinary life but also a call to younger generations to continue his vision – a light that will continue to shine in the world of cinema for years to come.
