Agents build cinematographers’ careers and connect them to the world of film

Agents in the field of cinematography help film professionals to find work, to negotiate and build a
professional career. Agents will give you work, money and make you famous, agents Lucy Price, Sarah
Campbell and Ranjinder Hans, agreed today at the Manaki cinema while discussing the main role of
agents in cinematography.

“The agent’s work is to always look for talents, to be in constant dialogue about the type of projects the
cinematographer is involved in, what kind of stories they want to tell. In the agency where I work, we
always check the pulse, we get information about where a film is being shot, who is involved in the
shooting process. Being connected is very important. We are always in dialogue with our clients, we are
their protectors”, Campbell said.

Asked how often their clients, the directors of photography, expect their films to win an Oscar, Hans said
that there are such expectations in practice.

“Sometimes the cinematographer thinks that his film will win an Oscar. But the film must be a hit, it
must make money. Sometimes there are great films, but they don’t win an Oscar and that is the sad
part. That is why festivals are important in this respect. At the Cannes festival, several months before
the Oscars, you can already sense which film will be a hit”, Hans said.

When it comes to selecting an agent, social networks are important, the agents concurred.
“When choosing an agent to represent them, film professionals should check who that agent is, research
them. People will Google you, so it is important as an agent to have a clear online trace, to have a
positive reptation online. When you send emails, write some compliments and always include your
social media profiles in the mails”, Price said.
